Managing the Dangerous Drift in Livestock Rustling and Banditry in Kenya, 2024

The livestock rustling and banditry menace poses a significant threat to Kenya’s national security. It has, in the recent years, caused untold suffering characterized by many deaths, injuries, and economic losses for the people, especially of the affected counties. Despite many government interventions, the problem persists and evolves, driven by changing local, national and regional dynamics. These dynamics are viewed to present new complexities thus exacerbating the problem and undermining existing mitigation measures. This study was designed to explore the evolving nature of livestock rustling and banditry, as well as the effectiveness of existing mitigation measures. The objectives included identifying the changed patterns, drivers, victims and perpetrators, mode of operation, consequences, and evaluating the control measures in place to address the problem of livestock rustling and banditry.
